For the first time in a very long time, I got to sleep in.  I slept until 11:00 which was really nice.  I got up, got ready, and made lunch.  I then headed off to the airport to meet my friend Sara and two other girls.  They are studying in Spain this semester and came to the Netherlands for the weekend.  Their flight got in at 2:00.  We then headed to Amsterdam to check them into their hostel.

Our first stop was the Anne Frank House.  I had not been here yet, so it was a new site to see.  Before the war, the building was Mr. Frank’s business.  When the Nazi’s invaded the Netherlands, life became difficult for the Jewish people.  Eventually, the Frank family decided to go into hiding.  A special living area was built in the building where eight people hid.  Sadly, someone spilled the secret and the Nazi’s took the people to concentration camps.  Only Mr. Frank survived.  He requested that all the furniture be removed from their hiding place.  So today, the museum is not furnished.  However, we were able to walk through the rooms.  We also walked through the bookcase which hid the entrance to the hiding place.  It was interesting to see.

We then decided to walk around for a little while.  We walked to Dam Square.  There was a carnival going on so it was very crowded and hard to get around.  We stopped at a place that had slices of pizza to go.  I had a pepperoni pizza slice that was very good.  We ate and then I headed back to Leiden.
