Today, Rick and I went to the Coliseum, Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum. We started our day by going to the Coliseum. Rachel had told us that she had found a tour to go on and suggested we do the same. The tour included the Coliseum, Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum. By doing the tour, we were able to have a tour guide and we didn’t have to wait in line for tickets. I think it was worth the little extra money.

We started at the Coliseum. We first stood outside and our tour guide told us some history. Rick and I had a hard time understanding our tour guide. It was hard to hear her, she talked very fast, and her accent was thick. But we were able to pick up a little bit. After she gave us a brief history we went inside and she told us more about the Coliseum. It was very impressive. After she was done giving the tour, we were given some time to walk around and take pictures ourselves. We were given a time and location to meet for the next part of the tour.

The second part of the tour included Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. We had a different tour guide for this par t of the tour. This tour guide was much better. He spoke loudly and we could understand him. We started at Palatine Hill which is where history says Rome was founded. Years ago there was a large palace that stood on the hill. While the majority of the palace is gone, it is amazing how much is still there. Our tour guide told us how Rome was founded and some history. After our tour, we were allowed to stay and look around Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. The Roman Forum contains many ruins from Roman times. I was amazed by how much of the old buildings were still there. Rick and I walked around for quite awhile.

By this time, it was early afternoon and time for us to be getting ready to go. We stopped to get souvenirs and then went to our hostel to pick up our belongings. We then took a slow train to Florence. We took this train because we did not need to pay for a seat reservation so it was free with our Eurail Passes. It was nice to see some of the countryside. We arrived in Florence after dark and found our hostel which was not too far from the train station. After checking in, we went to the hostel’s restaurant and had dinner. Rick had spaghetti and I had gnocchi which is like small soft noodles or dumplings. Both meals were about 5 Euros and were very good.
