I got to play tour guide today. I showed Carolyn, Tam, and Rick around Leiden. We started by seeing the old city gate, a windmill, Rembrandt Square, and the river. We then walked down the shopping street. It’s not really called the shopping street but the entire street has stores on both sides.
We had lunch at the Pannekoeken restaurant Steef and Dennis took the Central kids our first day in Leiden. Carolyn had one with apples, cinnamon, and sugar. I had a pannekoeken that was folded over with potatoes, carrots, peas, ham, mushrooms, and onions inside. It was really good. Tam ordered one with warm cherries, a scoop of ice cream, and powdered sugar. All of us ended up eating some of everyone’s. Since Rick had tried a pannekoeken when he was in Amsterdam in February, he opted for a club sandwich and fries with mayo.
After lunch, we stopped back at the hotel for a little down time. We then went to the large windmill in Leiden. Fortunately, it was open for self guided tours. It was very interesting. I hadn’t been in their before so it was nice to do something new in Leiden. At one point towards the top of the windmill, we were able to walk around outside. It provided a great view of the city. It was a really windy day though which made walking a little difficult. There was one wind gust that nearly blew me away!
After the windmill, I showed them where my school is located. We then stopped at the bakery to get a treat. I wished they could have been in Leiden on a Saturday so I could show them the market. But it wasn’t meant to be I guess. I decided to show them the area where the market was located and explained how big it was. We then went to the burcht.
We stopped at the grocery store where I usually shop so that we could get food for dinner. We went back to my residence. We made sweet and sour chicken and fried rice for dinner. After dinner Tam and Carolyn walked back to their hotel. Rick and I packed for our weekend in Paris.
