This morning we took our final exam. I am happy to say that it went well for me. The final consisted of three parts. The first part was 50 word fill in the blank. The text came straight from the book. It sounds easy but it’s not. The second section was also worth 50 points. This section was entitled the grammar section. The final part was a one on one interview. The professor asked us about fifteen questions in Dutch and we had to respond in Dutch. Most people are the most worried about this section. However, it was my best section.
After class, we went the grocery store and then made lunch. I decided to clean my room a little since it had been neglected over the last week. It still needs some work but at least everything is a little more organized. To celebrate the end of Dutch class, we decided to go out to eat. A friend of mine who studied here a year ago told me about a good Mexican restaurant. We agreed to eat there. My friend told me that the restaurant was called A La Rosa and thought it was on the Breestraat. Since I was leading the group, I decided to look up where the restaurant was just to make sure. I couldn’t find anything about A La Rosa online but I did find a restaurant called Oloroso which was on the street he told me. So I just thought he spelled the name incorrectly. That evening, we headed out and walked by a Mexican restaurant. We stopped outside the door and looked at it. It looked a little busy so we kept walking. We came to the restaurant that I found online. We stood outside pondering which one to go to. Finally we went into the Oloroso. We quickly discovered that this was not a good choice. The restaurant ended up being I think Mediterranean. The waitress came and asked in Dutch what we wanted to drink. Since we knew what she said we replied in Dutch that we wanted water. We had done this a few times in Leiden and it had been free like in America. However, this time we got a bottle of mineral water which ended up costing us 2 Euro each. The waitress came back and started asking me a question in Dutch. I had no clue what she was saying. She kept repeating herself and finally she said the word bread. Joel responded sure. We got a basket of freshly baked bread and this amazing garlic butter spread. She asked if we wanted an English menu and we replied yes. Joel ordered Italian chicken, Kyler ordered a spinach omelet, and I ordered Japanese chicken kabobs. I knew something wasn’t quite right when our meals were only 4.50 to 6.50 Euros. When the waitress brought our food we quickly found out why. Our plates were about three inches in diameter. All our food combined would have been a light meal for one person. We definitely were out of our comfort zone again. I am sure that in a week or two I will laugh about it. I feel somewhat responsible. However, after dinner the guys told me that they knew the first restaurant was the Mexican restaurant that we were planning to eat at. I missed the sign that said A La Rosa and they saw it. They thought I knew. Oh well.
After dinner, we went to the grocery store since we were all starving. We ended up just getting snack food since we really didn’t want to cook dinner. We played a couple card games. I wanted to go somewhere this weekend. The guys said they would come with me but I had to do all the planning. We decided to go to Delft on Saturday. I spent most of the evening planning where to go while they played more cards.
